Has anyone recovered from IT burnout? IT & Tech Careers.Producers in Hollywood may have thought he was a bit ba. It might not be Nanananana batman but one year previous to Checkpoint Charlie being dismantled, Tim Burton releases his version of Batman. Snap! PowerShell, MetaMask phishing, Brave Search, News & Insights, Zero Trust Spiceworks Originals. It takes a bit of time but you will get a solid 100% coverage out of the exact kit you wish to manage, once that is done you start to look into load balancing and increasing AP density based on the zone and usage profile. Personally I pick 2 APs which are at the feature set needed and take them onsite, then I scan/tune/test between them until I get the overlap right, then I map out from that location, moving the farthest AP along for my test. None of these things are covered with any basic software map or scan. The issue with basic analysis is there are many factors not taken into account such as high bandwidth and then latency sensitive applications, do you have one or the other or a lot of both? Do you have areas where you need wifi but only 1 or 2 devices in that zone active at a time, such as a warehouse scanner, or are you covering a large meeting room where 50 users will want to check their email all together? The meeting room can probably be covered with a single AP, but chances are you need a couple and a controller to manage load balancing the devices. More seriously, pick a couple of manufacturers who make kit you like and get them to do the survey for you, they will over spec it and almost certainly suggest more APs than you really need, but otoh, you have someone to report back to if they get it wrong. I've used both to troubleshoot remotely at clients.Įnd users, they make more noise than analysis tools, they also perform real world testing you just can't simulate. I know Meraki and the newer Ubiquiti UAP models with a new version of the controller software both have some good tools built in to show you what is around that could be interfering. What model of wireless access points do you have? Many of them have some troubleshooting and scanning built in that can help. Wireless issues can be tricky if you don't troubleshoot them every day.Īlso, just thought of this. If you don't see any obvious issues you might want to call a wireless pro in your area. You can't beat a professional wireless site survey. I haven't used it but that could be another solution if you have a windows laptop that doesn't have good wifi built in or you need to check other RF interference that is not wifi. You can get a WiSpy dongle to go with inSSIDer for a few hundred bucks. The best one of those and the one we use for big site surveys is AirMagnet but that will set you back about $10,000. You'll get much more accurate scans and even be able to scan for other non-wifi interference with one of those special usb wireless dongles. If you are going to scan on a PC, just make sure you have a good wireless chipset on a high quality laptop or you use a high quality USB dongle so you get good accurate results. In my experience, Macs will give you a much better reading because they have a better quality wireless chipset and antenna than most cheap Windows PCs. Mac: WiFi Scanner from Mac app store $20 or NetSpot Pro $149 (though I got it for $15 from Bundle Hunt when they had the sale a few weeks ago) Windows: inSSIDer Office $149 or there is a personal version for $20
